Raiding the Frontier – FIW

After surviving our first cyclone for the year, we decided to celebrate by playing a great little game of Sharp Practice – French and Indian War between Brian Buskell (playing the British) and me (playing the French).

The game played well with all of Brian’s cards coming out in the first hand, and with that, he pretty much deployed all five units he had for the game. The early deployment also took me a little by surprise, as I am not always one to play all my hand on the first turn, but there they were, and with that, he also managed to take the first shots of the game. In that first volley, his troops pretty much destroyed my best skirmisher unit…..nasty stuff.

As you could then imagine, Brian’s blood was up, and he was keen to inflict as much hurt on my French as he could. But I, too, had a few cards up my sleeve, and on the next play, I managed to catch and destroy a unit of his militia with my Allied Indians. The pressure was on.

However, with my screen of skirmishers falling back fast in the face of some well-directed volleys, Brian wheeled his regular troops around and started to inflict some serious damage to my French Marine infantry. The poor lads were quickly reduced to below half strength with two plays of the cards….and they never did get a shot at the English. It was not looking good for my French.

I had one more card and threw my last unit of Indian Allies, hoping to inflict as much hurt on the British Regulars before I was forced off the field of battle. It was a good fight, but my Indians did not fight hard enough (or was that my dice roll) and were forced back. That was it, the French morale dropped, and the game went to Brian and his English forces.
