Another Battle During the Dutch Wars of Independence – 1598

Last Sunday the lads at the club played a fantastic Pike & Shot game based on the Dutch/Spanish 80YW, however, focused on the transition period of the Dutch Army when they were converting Lancer Regiments to Cuirassier Regiments so close to 1598 ish. The two sides were evenly matched in points (900 points per side) when using the Baroque rules, however, the might of the Spanish Tercios certainly proved their worth as the masters of the battlefield. Our Dutch cavalry eventually defeated their Spanish counterparts but unfortunately, the infantry regiments suffered badly from overwhelming Spanish artillery fire and when fronting the massed regiments of the Spanish Tercios.

Thanks must go to John Maguire for suppling the Spanish, the Dutch are from my collection, and to David Lowe and Terry Moran for being such good sports throughout the game. Overall we all had fun which is what it is all about. So hopefully you will enjoy the latest images from our game.

All the best

Vinnie

  1. Damn, Im going to have to rebase my figures. Putting the entire battalia on one base looks far better and is more practical as well. Beautiful game, well done.

  2. Thanks for the great comments again everyone. We love playing this period and up until the end of the TYW. The Baroque rules are quite good and easy to learn. They are definitely worth looking at.

  3. Vinnie, how do you do the roads? Do you shape them according to the game throwing some white stuff on the board? and if you do, how do you remove the white powder?

    Thank you,
    Lorenzo

  4. Hi Lorenzo,

The roads are poured onto the table from a mix of builders sand and a BBQ sorbet. I than shape them with a paint brush. Quite effective I think. Once the game is over I simply pour the mix back into a container until the next game.

  5. Hi Vinnie, Love the figures, terrain and I like reading about the battles in play. To me it's like looking at individual Vignettes – dioramas in action – stunningly beautiful.

Whose make are the figures? Which books did you use to reference the tactics, uniforms and flags?

    Cheers
